Conductor and Musical Director, Dr Paul Tierney will lead the choir and orchestra in this performance sung in German accompanied by two acclaimed soloists. The first half will contain Brahms’ Schicksalslied (“Song of Fate”), Op. 54 (1868-1871), sometimes dubbed as the “Little Requiem”, which is a cantata for choir and orchestra.
The piece is based on a poem by Friedrich Hölderlin. The second half will contain Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem (“A German Requiem”), Op.45 (1865-1868) which is a profound seven-movement masterpiece for choir and orchestra.
It was written by Brahms after the death of his mother but composed to be a piece of music that brought comfort, solace and hope to the living.
It brought international acclaim to Brahms during his lifetime and is one of his best loved and most recognisable works.”
