The Bugle: Past & Present

An exhibition celebrating the art and writing of The Bugle, Bethany Christian Trust's long-running creative arts group and magazine, featuring current contributors and work from the archives.The Bugle Creative Writing Group and Magazine is a long-running project within Bethany Christian Trust's Homelessness Prevention stream of services.

Each Wednesday afternoon, up to a dozen individuals meet at Bethany's learning centre, to enjoy workshops with professional authors, shared writing time and a sociable atmosphere.

The group also organises regular trips to performances and exhibitions across Edinburgh throughout the year.Since its inception, the group's magazine has been an important platform for sharing their poetry, prose, paintings, illustrations and photography with the wider public.

Currently published twice a year, around 300 copies are circulated through nearly 70 distribution points and subscribers.

Since the pandemic, it has also increased its online reach, with over 3,000 copies download around the world in 2025/26.Last year, the group reached their 20th birthday and celebrated their 60th edition.

For this, they held an exhibition at The Custom House, Leith, which was a huge success and bonded the collective further as they collaborated to produce the event.

Now, they are determined to add the exhibition permanently to their annual programme.Visitors will get to enjoy the work of regular members, as well as contributions from individuals involved with Bethany's services nationwide.

The exhibition will also include all 61 back issues of the magazine, whilst acting as a launch from the brand new Issue 62.
