About

In November 1910 a controversial exhibition opened at the Grafton Galleries in London.

In November 1910 a controversial exhibition opened at the Grafton Galleries in London. ‘Manet and the Post-Impressionists’ included works by Gauguin, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Picasso and Manet, among others.

It caused a sensation, and changed the whole direction of art in England.

This lecture from Dr David Boyd Haycock (author of A Crisis of Brilliance: Five Young British Artists and the Great War) will take a look at Fry’s exhibition, the reaction among the press and the public, and explores what it did to art in this country over the next 50 years. This event is programmed to accompany the opening of Art Then! This extensive new exhibition at Southampton City Art Gallery will celebrate half a century of Modern British Art.

Curated by Dr David Boyd Haycock and in collaboration with the Ingram Collection, it will bring together a hundred paintings, sculptures and drawings from one of the most exciting periods in British art.
