It's Christmas, and Beth Timms is newly widowed. Her late husband Gordon was a health and safety officer, a man who never met a risk he couldn't laminate.
Her well-meaning family has arrived to give her a peaceful Christmas. Sister-in-law Connie keeps a close eye on the drinks cabinet, son Martin is lost in his own world, and his girlfriend Ella says absolutely nothing at all. The calm doesn't last long.
The kindly local vicar offers Beth a prayer for comfort. Instead, he accidentally calls Gordon back from the dead. Gordon has been busy bringing health and safety standards to the afterlife, and he's decided to stay and sort out Beth's affairs. It turns out not everyone is pleased to see him.
