Handel's Susanna
Conductor: Lindsay Bramley.
Stage Director: Patricia Gmez.
With the Richmond Opera baroque orchestra, soloistsandchorus.
Sung in English. From our director: "To emphasise that Susanna's story is as relevant today as it was in biblical times, I'm borrowing a narrative device used in The Hours. This is a book that got adapted into a movie with Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore and Meryl Streep, plus an opera produced by The Met - all wonderful. It tells the story of three women: Virginia Woolf as she writes Mrs. Dalloway whilst dealing with depression, an American housewife who finds solace in reading Mrs. Dalloway and a contemporary woman in New York City with circumstances similar to Mrs. Dalloway's.In our case, we will not only be telling the biblical story of Susanna in its biblical setting, but also the stories of two other women: one novice who is reading Susanna's story from the Bible, and another woman in modern times who suffers a situation of abuse from a partner."
