Halesworth & District U3A presents: William Shaw Lindsay MP, From Cabin Boy to Shipping Magnate

NB: This talk will be preceded by the AGM at 2:00pm.

The talk will start at approx 2:30pm.Presented by William Lindsay, whose great great grandfather progressed from penniless orphaned cabin boy to shipping magnate and MP.

After nine years at sea, he became a shipbroker and shipowner.

His ships were involved in emigration to Australia and Canada, in the Crimean War, and the American Civil War.

His diaries in the National Maritime Museum are full of anecdotes of famous Victorians whom he met, ranging from Brunel, Dickens, Disraeli, Lincoln and NightingalePlease note U3A talks now start at 2PM and are free to members, for non-members tickets are available at 4 in advance or on the door.
