In the turmoil of a military coup, kitchen maid Grusha makes a life-changing decision to rescue an abandoned child and raise him as her own. Years later, when the child's biological mother returns to claim him, an extraordinary courtroom battle unfolds before the unconventional Judge Azdak, who turns to the ancient test of the chalk circle to decide where justice truly lies.
Stage Beyond adapts Frank McGuinness's acclaimed translation of Bertolt Brecht's post-war masterpiece. It is a compelling exploration of love, justice, morality and belonging. This moving production asks a timeless question: what truly makes someone a parent?
The production is directed by Kate Guelke, who recently assisted director Kip Williams at English National Opera. It combines epic storytelling with Stage Beyond's distinctive, multi-award-winning inclusive approach to theatre-making with adults with learning disabilities.
