Our story is set in the wild west lands of Deadwood City, Dakota Territory 1876. The atmosphere in this rustic backwater is lusty, warm and completely dependent on the safe arrival of the stagecoach for supplies and communication. Here we follow the adventures of outspoken and fearless Calamity Jane who dresses, rides and shoots like a man, but given the chance shows she can be a beautiful girl who yearns for the love of a man. Will this man be dashing Lt. Danny Gilmartin or the justly notorious Wild Bill Hickock? The hilarious twists and turns of the plot lead the audience to a most unexpected outcome. This well-loved musical with its toe-tapping melodies, tells the story of bravery, friendship, love and finding where you truly belong. The History of Calamity Jane:
Adapted from the successful Warner Brothers film of 1953 starring Doris Day and Howard Keel, the idea of Calamity Jane was based on the real-life Martha Jane Cannary who scraped a living in a mans world by taking on mens work and a male persona.
In 1875, she travelled with the US Army into the Black Hills of Dakota and probably did meet the Western legend Wild Bill Hickock.
Said always to have shown kindness and compassion to others despite leading a life of hardship and poverty, her skills with a gun led to her appearing in Buffalo Bills Wild West Show before her death aged 51 in 1903, and notoriety as a frontier figure.
