Scottish neoclassical composer Lindsay Taylor is launching Scotland’s first ever lying-down piano concerts, inviting audiences to rest, reflect, journal, or even sleep – surrounded by live music. The intimate, donation-based concerts see audiences lying on yoga mats around Taylor as he performs a 45-minute set of composed and improvised piano music.

There is no pressure to applaud, no expectation to sit still, and no obligation to stay until the end.The concept debuted on 31st October at Edinburgh’s Pianodrome - a unique amphitheatre built from more than 40 upcycled pianos - with a last-minute, free show organised just two days in advance.

Despite the short notice, the concert sold out at 40 people and received an overwhelmingly emotional response.Audience members were encouraged to listen to their bodies, journal freely, and share any thoughts or creative responses afterwards.

Many chose to write poems, reflections and handwritten notes inspired by the music, which Taylor collected at the end of the performance.“The rule was: if you’re tired, sleep.

Listen to your body and let it do what it needs to do,” says Taylor. “I wanted to create a space where people could slow down and just be.”Feedback from the audience included comments such as “Feeling calm and inspired,” “A kindness to tired souls,” and “The gig as a whole made me feel free.”Following the success of the first performance, Taylor has been invited back by the Pianodrome to host the concerts monthly, with three further dates announced for early 2026, the first of which being on Thursday 22nd January.Taylor, who has been playing piano since the age of eight, describes his work as “music for stillness, curiosity and honest emotion.” His live performances blend slower versions of his composed songs with raw improvisation, allowing space for both his own vulnerability and the audience’s imagination.“When I improvise, I can’t hide behind what I already know,” he says. “It lets me be really present – like a kid playing in a sandpit, but on a piano.”
