The Library Theatre at 70 Exhibition

Back by popular demand! In 1955, Stephen Joseph founded the UK's first professional theatre-in-the-round on the first floor of Scarborough Library.

This exhibition of more than 90 photos chronicles the 21 years theatre in the round was resident at the library from the first production with Stephen Joseph to Alan Ayckbourn toasting the final night in 1976.

Curated by Alan Ayckbourn's archivist, Simon Murgatroyd M.A., more than half the photographs of productions, people and life at the theatre are new for 2026 with many on public view for the very first time.
