XQUENDA is the story of a young indigenous woman from rural Oaxaca, Mexico, and her search for justice after the disappearance and murder of her best friend, as no one seems to care due to their social and economic conditions. Her protest is through her Poems. Her weapon is her Words.Through letters written while she's protesting, we get to know her life, her traditions and culture, the magic al realism that is the heart of her town, and her love and connection with her ancestors and with the nature of the world that surrounds her, that although beautiful, not necessarily fair for women. Xquenda, is a word in ancient Zapotec which means "Soul" referring to the true self of a person, and what remains on earth after death.Accompanied by live music and recorded tracks with traditional mexican rhythms, the piece is performed in English, with slang and songs in Spanish, and Zapotec languages.Based on a true story."Political, tender and absolutely committed to remembering what the world prefers to forget", Binge Fringe Magazine, 4stars.
"A perfectly structured, poetically pieced story that transfixes you as an audience member. The writing and form are sublime... Xquenda is mesmerising", London Fringe Theatre Review, 4 stars.
