Jaliyaa Kumbengo

Supported by Arts Council England and produced by Music Worldwide, Jaliyaa Kumbengo is a live and participatory programme bringing together Gambian griot masters Sefo Kanuteh & special guest Jali Musa Jobarteh for a unique evening of cultural exchange. In Mandinka, Jaliyaa refers to the griot tradition a living practice of music, oral history & cultural memory passed through generations while Kumbengo translates as coming together or gathering.The evening combines:a pop-up photographic exhibition tracing Sefos musical lineage & journey
a FREE interactive music workshopexploring kora, voice & collective improvisation (open to all levels). Participants are welcome to bring their own string or hand percussion instruments, or simply join through voice and singing. Those wishing to participate in the free workshop must reserve a ticket.
a live performance of this 5 piece line-up blending traditional Mande music with contemporary global influencesRooted in generations of griot tradition, the event offers audiences a rare opportunity to engage directly with West African musical heritage through making, learning & shared experience, culminating in a vibrant concert performance.
