Lower Clyne Valley Industrial & Hidden Landscapes Walk
This walk explores the rich historical geography of the lower Clyne Valley, tracing how industry, transport, and wartime defence have shaped the landscape.
Following mainly flat valley-floor paths, the route visits the sites of several former collieries and the remains of three historic railway lines that once carried coal and materials through the valley. Along the way, walkers will also hear about the former Clyne Valley racecourse, a reminder of the valleys changing recreational use.
The walk continues to features linked to the Second World War Gower Stop Line, where defensive structures once formed part of Britains coastal protection network. A stop at the former claypit reveals the industrial past of the Clyne Valley Brickworks, alongside discussion of the valleys Carboniferous geology, which provided the raw materials for its industries.
As this is a short walk there is no need for a packed lunch. Toilets are available at the start and finish. The walk is not suitable for dogs (except guide dogs) and is not suitable for children.walk leader Rob Edwards is associated with the Clyne Valley Volunteers, a community-led group based in Swansea dedicated to the care, restoration, and improvement of the Clyne Valley Country Park. The group works in partnership with local authorities and conservation bodies to maintain paths, clear overgrowth, improve access, and protect the valleys natural and historical features. As a volunteer leader, Rob Edwards is involved in organising practical conservation work and community activities, helping to restore habitats, manage woodland, and support biodiversity in the valley. The group also contributes to preserving the areas industrial heritage, including remnants of former collieries and railway infrastructure. The Clyne Valley Volunteers bring together local residents to enhance this important green corridor between Swansea and the Gower fringe, promoting outdoor wellbeing, environmental stewardship, and public access to nature. Their work helps ensure the valley remains a valued space for walking, wildlife, and community engagement.
