Ronald Hutton - the Pagan Religions of Ancient Monmouthshire

Back by popular demand!Our pagan past, with its mysterious monuments, atmospheric sites, enigmatic artifacts, bloodthirsty legends, and cryptic inscriptions, is both enthralling and perplexing.

Who were these ancient pagans and what were they practising in Monmouthshire?Ronald Hutton is an engaging and acclaimed broadcaster, author and academic.

He has written twenty books, ninety-six essays and sits on the editorial boards of six journals concerned with the history of religion and magic.

As Professor of History at Bristol University he has won several awards for teaching and research.Ronald is currently working on the third volume of his biography of Oliver Cromwell.

The first title Oliver Cromwell: The Making of was a Sunday Times Book of The Year.

The second volume Commander in Chief is now available.This is an in-person event at Tintern Village Hall.

There is disabled access, loos and limited free parking at the venue.

Parking along the village Main Rd (A466) is permitted and unrestricted after 6pm.

The next closest car-park is at Tintern Abbey after which you can cut through the playing fields or walk along the river footpath to quickly reach the Village Hall.This talk is run by the Lower Wye Valley Building Preservation Trust, a volunteer charity which is purchasing St Mary's Church - a seriously at risk listed building and scheduled monument on the hillside above Tintern Abbey.

Consolidating this ruin is our current priority (for safety reasons this site is currently closed and unauthorised entry is prohibited), but LWVBPT are also lobbying Welsh Water and the Wye Valley Community Council to restore the Fryer's Wharf Slipway, an ancient crossing and landing point connecting England and Wales, to public use.Annual membership costs 10 a year per person, and other than the satisfaction of directly helping to conserve our heritage, gives a discount to our events as well as other offers.
