Join local ceramics expert Miranda Goodby to discover the history of pottery making in Newcastle-under-Lyme.About the talkBetween 1969 and 1971 excavations on the site of the Old Pomona Inn in Lower Street, turned up earthenware and porcelaneous wasters, including a small bowl painted in blue with the date '25th July 1746'. The earthenware sherds were expected as Samuel Bell (1684-1744) was known to have had a pottery on the site. The porcelaneous sherds were not expected and the search was immediately on to try to discover who had made them and to match the sherds to any extant examples. In the decades since the excavations took place much new information has been discovered. This talk will look at the evidence for what was made at the site, and who may have made it, and will put it into context with contemporary porcelain experiments in both Staffordshire and London.Getting to the museum and accessFind details about how to get to the museum, where to park and the support we can offer to make your visit accessible and enjoyable.Image Description
