The Unfriend
What begins as a holiday friendship takes an unexpected and increasingly unsettling turn - in The Unfriend, Steven Moffats sharply observed comedy of manners. When Peter and Debbie meet the exuberant American widow Elsa on a cruise, they make a casual promise to stay in touch; one of those polite conventions rarely meant to be kept. But months later, Elsa arrives unannounced at their suburban home, turning their carefully ordered lives upside down. As their guest settles in, her bold personality quickly clashes with their reserved British sensibilities, creating a series of awkward and hilarious situations.
Yet beneath the comedy lies a growing sense that something is not quite right. A quick online search reveals troubling details about Elsas past, plunging the couple into a dilemma: how do you confront a potentially dangerous houseguest when doing so might seem rude? Blending farce with a touch of suspense, The Unfriend explores the limits of politeness, the absurdity of social niceties, and what happens when good manners become a liability. The result is a fast-paced, witty, and darkly comic examination of British reserve meeting unapologetic American candour.
An amateur production by arrangement with Nick Hern Books.
