Nick Crane - the Path More Travelled: the Secret History of Footpaths

About
Walking defines us as human beings. But how much do we know about the paths that we walk? Why do they matter? What caused so many to be lost?
Walking defines us as human beings.
But how much do we know about the paths that we walk? Why do they matter? What caused so many to be lost? And can we create more of them?Acclaimed geographer, TV presenter (Coast) and travel writer Nicholas Crane explores the hidden history of Britain's footpaths in a conversation with fellow author Mark McCrum.
Drawing upon his latest book The Path More Travelled they will explore the prehistoric routeways walked by European migrants 12,000 years ago to pilgrim ways and coffin roads, turnpikes, towpaths and city pavements.Discover how land-grabbing Norman barons began the enclosure of our countryside, and how our beloved national parks and long-distance trails emerged from the ashes of two world wars.
Nick will share some of his most memorable walks: Hadrian's Wall Path, the icy Cairngorms and, closer to home, the banks of the Severn where one can see footprints from over 7,000 years ago. This is an in-person event at Tintern Village Hall.
There is disabled access, loos and limited free parking at the venue.
Parking along the village Main Rd (A466) is permitted and unrestricted after 6pm.
The next closest car-park is at Tintern Abbey after which you can cut through the playing fields or walk along the river footpath to quickly reach the Village Hall. This talk is run by volunteers and all proceeds go to the St Mary's Conservation Fund, a picturesque listed ruin and Scheduled Monument on the ancient site of Chapel Hill, Tintern.
For safety reasons this site is currently closed, but the Lower Wye Valley Building Preservation Trust intend to consolidate this sacred space and reopen it to the public.Email info@lwvbpt.org if you would like to join the charity, volunteer, make a donation or find out more about this project and the Fryer's Wharf restoration campaign.
