The son of Johann Stamitz, founder of the celebrated Mannheim orchestra, Carl inherited and further developed its renowned orchestral virtuosity, vivid dynamic contrasts and colourful instrumental writing.

Presented here in a newly reimagined orchestration for full symphony orchestra, the work is heard through a broader Romantic palette that brings its lyrical invention and dramatic potential into dialogue with Schumann's symphonic world.

Evoking the idealised landscapes and pastoral sentiments so admired in the late eighteenth century, the symphony combines graceful melodies, dramatic contrasts and richly expanded orchestral colour, offering a compelling new perspective on one of the Classical era's most accomplished symphonists.The concert concludes with Robert Schumann's Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, Op. 97, the celebrated Rhenish Symphony.

Composed in 1850 shortly after Schumann's appointment as Municipal Music Director in Dusseldorf, the symphony was inspired by the composer's deep affection for the Rhineland and the vitality of its landscapes, people and traditions.

Across its five movements, Schumann departs from the conventional four-movement symphonic design to create a work of remarkable breadth and character, from its exuberant opening to the solemn majesty of its famous fourth movement, inspired by the grandeur of Cologne Cathedral.

Rich in melodic invention, contrapuntal mastery and radiant orchestral sonorities, the Rhenish stands among the composer's greatest orchestral achievements and one of the defining symphonies of the Romantic repertoire.This special charity concert celebrates the enduring dialogue between Classical innovation and Romantic expression while reflecting the Reverie Sinfonia's commitment to reimagining neglected repertoire for contemporary audiences.
