Born in the same year as Outburst, The Black Box has been our beloved home for two decades of incendiary performances, riotous dance nights and - sometimes quite literally - no-holes-barred craic.
A linchpin of the creative community in Belfast, the Black Box has been central to the growth of the festival and to the creative birth and blossoming of so many artists we have worked with. From the anarchic glory of Lucy McCormick and the queer revival-tent poetry of Joelle Taylor, to the glorious high notes of Ross Anderson-Doherty and beardy boldness of Gemma Hutton, the big room has witnessed some magical happenings at Outburst over the past 20 years. And so much of that has been captured, thanks to incredible photographers like Anne Ramsey, Bernie McAllister and Ellen Blair.
It’s been a blast to dig deep into our archive to put together just a small selection of photographs from the many memory-filled nights and days we’ve had in our favourite spot.We invite you to share your own Outburst / Black Box photo memories online during the exhibition run too, so tag us on Instagram and we’ll share your stories! @outburstqueerarts20 Years of Outburst at The Black Box runs from Thursday 5 November through the festival, in the Black Box Green Room.
