The Government Inspector by Philip Goulding

A Victorian adaptation of The Government Inspector follows a similar story but is set in nineteenth-century England, where a group of dishonest local officials fear the arrival of a government inspector sent to investigate corruption and poor administration.

Mistaking an ordinary young man for the inspector, they attempt to win his favour with money, gifts, and lavish hospitality, hoping to conceal their own misconduct.

The visitor soon realizes the mistake and exploits the situation for his own benefit before escaping.

The officials are left humiliated when they discover that the real inspector is only just arriving.

Like Gogol's original play, the Victorian version uses comedy and dramatic irony to expose corruption, hypocrisy, and the abuse of authority, while highlighting the importance of honesty and accountability in public life.
