TICKET PRICES PENDING Carmina Burana is a world famous cantata by the German composer Carl Orff, which premiered in Frankfurt in 1937. Beneath its thunderous, dramatic choruses - like the iconic O Fortuna used in adverts, films and the reality TV show X-Factor - the piece is essentially a riotous, secular celebration of earthly pleasures, and a reflection on the unpredictable nature of fate.This concert pairs Carmina Burana, with a first half performance of Maurice Durufl's Requiem - a deeply spiritual, introspective, and comforting prayer for the dead completed in 1947.Despite contrasting soundscapes and subject matter, both 20th Century masterpieces are entirely built upon medieval foundations. Durufl based his Requiem on the melodies of the 10th century Gregorian Mass for the Dead. Carl Orff based Carmina Burana on a 13th Century manuscript written by Goliards wandering monks and students who wrote satirical, sensual poetry in Latin and High German.
