Věra Chytilová’s classic of surrealist cinema is one of the most adventurous and anarchic films of the Czech New Wave, as well as one of the most exhilaratingly stylistic and psychedelic explosions of 1960s cinema in general. Two young women, both named Marie, revolt against a degenerate and oppressive society, attacking symbols of wealth and bourgeois culture through a string of outrageous set pieces.
A riotous, punk-poem of a film that is both hilarious and mind-warpingly innovative, it has influenced generations of filmmakers.
Defiant feminist statement? Nihilistic, avant-garde comedy? Daisies remains a cinematic enigma.
Remarkable and refreshingly uncompromising, it continues to provoke, stimulate and entertain audiences and its influence is still felt today. Before the feature screening, we will be presenting some short films courtesy of WOFFF, the Women Over 50 Film Festival.
