Moth Mornings

Did you know that some moths only live for one day and never actually eat? And when you see a caterpillar it is far more likely to be a moth caterpillar rather than a butterfly caterpillar!Moth traps allow us to record the species we get at Martin Mere - currently at 315 moths, as well as giving you an opportunity to get up close to these amazing creatures to take fantastic photos.

To record the species, we use a light trap set up overnight.

The moths are attracted to the light, go down the funnel, and hide amongst the egg boxes.

Then in the morning, we see what we caught and let the moths go.
