The villagers in Llareggub lead ordinary, mundane lives. They go about the day doing everyday tasks like preparing for school or work, collecting water, or scrubbing floors. The beauty and meaning of the play comes from the simplicity of the lives of the villagers. They are people who are accessible to the audience. The villagers are not performing monumental tasks or tackling mighty problems. They are sending letters, gossiping, attending school, and drinking at pubs. Thomas is careful to choose simple, beautiful language for this play for voices. The simplicity of language and the lives of the people highlight the inherent beauty and value of everyday life. The characters are somewhat exaggerated especially with names related to their careers. The characteristics of the townspeople are over-the-top but they are recognizable and do not undergo major character development or face complicated problems.
