The West was under the rule of Christendom for up to one and a half a millennia after Augustines City of God was written, but this appears to have drawn to a close. Where society and rulers submitted to God, now an impersonal state presides over a society which has moved from community and custom to contract and self-interest. Is our present secular society still informed by Christian values and Christian civilisation (Tom Holland, in Dominium), or do we actually live in a post-Christian society? A revived far Right has even linked the idea of a Christian civilisation to claim that multiculturalism and immigration threatens civilisational erasure. In addressing these problems, are the arguments of Augustines City of God still relevant?
Session led by Dr Geoffrey Foote.
