Wantage, Old Berkshire, and the Boer War - Afternoon Talk

In the last winter of the 19th Century, three British garrisons in South Africa are surrounded, attempts to relieve them are hurled back in defeat, and an Empire is humiliated. For the first time, the British government asks for volunteers and a number of local men step forward. In Berkshire, two companies of 'Imperial Yeomanry' are quickly raised. In Wantage, the Boer War dominated public life for a year, as money was raised for charity, victories were celebrated, and dissent was shouted down. But, as the war dragged on, it became ever more bitter and controversial.
This talk tells the story of the last great war of the Victorian age, both for the local men on the front line and for those on the home front.Tickets 7.50 per personSuitable for ages 16+
