ERCU marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Benjamin Britten, one of Britains greatest creative artists, with a selection of his choral works, including his joyous cantata, Saint Nicolas , some of the brightest, boldest and most colourful music that he ever wrote, in a story of prison breaks, pickled boys and adventures at sea.The patron saint of music, St Cecilia, also features in our concert, in a setting by Herbert Howells of a poem by Ursula Vaughan Williams. We go back to the 18th century for Joseph Haydns Missa Brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo , known as the Little Organ Mass as it features an extensive organ solo. During Haydns lifetime, this was among his most popular works.BENJAMIN BRITTEN
