The programme showcases some of the most iconic works ever written for strings. We open with MozartsEine kleine Nachtmusik, originally written as light outdoor evening entertainment for Viennas great and good, in a world where social occasions called for music that was both refined and instantly engaging. This is followed by Bachs Violin Concerto in A minor a work of yearning and melancholy, shot through with moments of technical brilliance that let the violinist soar.
The second half is devoted to Vivaldi, beginning with his fieryLa Follia, based on one of Europes oldest musical themes, reimagined over centuries by countless composers. Vivaldi transforms this simple ground bass into a dazzling sequence of variations, brimming with invention and virtuosity.
