Cwf26 Walk 6 - The Lost Railways Of Newport

Join the Newport Transporter Bridge Project Team and Monmouthshire Railway Society for a linear guided walk tracing Newports historic railway network in the City Centre and Pillgwenlly.

Starting at the City Centre bank of the River Usk, we trace old tramroad routes which evolved into railways in the 19th century.

We walk part of the riverbank, then to Cardiff Rd, Kingsway, and George St, before exploring the maze of lines and an ex-locomotive depot and works in the Dock St / Commercial Rd area.The route is entirely flat and taken at a slow walking pace, with frequent stops to explain each locations past railway infrastructure.

We will then finish at the magnificent Transporter Bridge, with its upside down train, to learn about the current ongoing restoration project.

As we will be standing outside the wonderful Waterloo Hotel, it would be great to support this wonderful Grade 2 listed historic hostelry, recently reopened to the public.Returnable photos and maps, documenting the various locations visited, will be provided for the walk.

Please note that due to the exciting and much-needed ongoing refurbishment project on the Transporter Bridge, there is likely to be no access to the Visitor Centre.This is a linear walk - options to return via local bus services from nearbyMendalgief Retail ParkThis walk is not suitable for dogs.2 miles easy on flat terrain.
