Zakia Sewell - Finding Albion

Zakia Sewell is on a quest to find another Britain - one that shuns divisive flag waving and anti-immigration rhetoric.

Traversing the length and breadth of our island, via, among other places, Carmarthenshire, the Inner Hebrides and the Notting Hill Carnival, she's in search of a more honest national identity that challenges tired narratives of empire and reconnects us with a deeper past.She discovers it in folk songs, ancient legends and the mystic stone circles that punctuate our landscape.

Finding Albion follows the Wheel of the Year, a pagan way to chart the changing seasons.

Her journey begins as the sun rises on one spring equinox over Glastonbury Tor and ends on spring equinox a year later here in Wiltshire at Stonehenge.Building on My Albion, her BBC Radio 4 series, the book explores whether she can truly belong in Britain - her father's family line stretches back to tin-mining stock in Cornwall, her mother's to the tiny Caribbean island of Carriacou.

It's an uplifting mission that heralds the promise of a brighter future. "We are in dire need of different stories about Britain," she says.
