Heritage Open Day at the Florence Nightingale Museum

Free entry all day! Discover the stories of nursing through time!When visiting the Florence Nightingale Museum you are able to trace the life of Florence Nightingale – the iconic ‘lady with the lamp’ who forever changed the Nursing profession here in the UK.

Learn about her peculiar pet, how she tended to soldiers during the Crimean War, and how she set up the first nurse training school of its kind.

You can also see the continuation of this legacy to modern day within our Healing Spaces: Healthcare Design Past, Present and Future Exhibition.

In this section you will be able to see how the groundwork that Nightingale laid in the field of healthcare design is alive and well today.

Read case studies from around the world showcasing how nurses are making their mark.You will also discover the little known story of Catherine Pine – private nurse to Emmeline Pankhurst and the suffragettes within our temporary exhibition In Focus: Nurse Catherine Pine.

Her story is closely intertwined with the suffrage movement and one that we are so excited to tell.

This space will also exhibit for the first time, Nurse Pine’s medal that was awarded to her for her work and had been missing for 80 years.

Throughout the day there will be a member of our team hosting a very special drop-in object handling session.

Three replica medals will be available: a reproduction of Nurse Catherine Pine’s medal ‘For Duty’, Lady Constance Lytton’s medal ‘For Valor’, and a Hunger Strike Medal created for Alice Paul.
