To mark the 60th anniversary of her tragically early death, Call Boy Editor Geoff Bowden looks back at the life and glittering career of the popular British singer Alma Cogan, who rose to fame in the 1950s and had more hit records in that decade than any other female singer. A glamorous presence on TV and stage with her fabulous, extravagant dresses, Alma reputedly was Britain's highest paid female performer of that era. In the 1960s she became an international success before illness curtailed her career.About Geoff Bowden
Geoff lasted a year with one of London's last concert parties; performed Jerry Herman songs at the Purcell Room with Christopher Cazenove; sang Old Bazaar In Cairo to passengers on a Nile cruiser sailing down to Aswan and performed Ivor Novello's song Dartmoor Days to prisoners at Wormwood Scrubs - and lived to tell the tale. He ran his own revue group Serendipity, touring theatres with soprano Marilyn Hill Smith; he managed to write a book on the Intimate Theatre in Palmers Green (Intimate Memories); has written articles for various arts magazines; contributed sleeve notes for CDs, given talks to various societies and groups; co-organised the British Music Hall Society's Day By The Sea events to date, and since 2009 has been the editor of the Society's magazine The Call Boy.For access information please call The CAA on 020 7836 3172.A booking fee will be added to your ticket price when you check out.
