St Mary's by Candlelight - An Illuminating Evening Tour

Step inside one of Kirkby Lonsdale's most historic buildings and discover its remarkable past in the atmospheric glow of candlelight.
The origins of St Mary's Church stretch back more than a thousand years. When Norse settlers arrived in the Lune Valley during the tenth century, a place of worship was already established on the site. Evidence suggests possible Saxon origins, while fragments of earlier buildings were incorporated into the magnificent Norman church that began taking shape in the early twelfth century.
Today, St Mary's is a fascinating architectural treasure, with its richly decorated Norman piers, beautiful stained-glass windows and centuries of history waiting to be discovered.
Join experienced Blue Badge Tourist Guide Tess Pike for a special evening tour that reveals the church's stories, architectural details and hidden corners in a completely different light. As candlelight casts its gentle glow across ancient stonework, discover how successive generations have shaped this remarkable building and the community surrounding it.Whether you're fascinated by local history, architecture or simply enjoy exploring familiar places from a fresh perspective, this promises to be a memorable and illuminating experience.Booking essential: Places are strictly limited to 20 participants to ensure an intimate and enjoyable tour.
