Following their successful run of Guys and Dolls at the Theatre Royal, the award-winning Bath Operatic and Dramatic Society present A Little Night Music at The Mission Theatre.

Set in Sweden in 1900, A Little Night Music explores a tangled web of love affairs centred around the glamorous actress Desiree Armfeldt. Lawyer Fredrik Egerman, a former lover of Desiree’s, reunites with the actress while waiting to consummate his marriage to his young wife, Anne. Meanwhile, Count Carl-Magnus, a soldier, appears as devoted to Desiree as he is to his long-suffering wife, Charlotte… With everyone arriving at Desiree’s mother’s country estate for the weekend, it is anyone’s guess who will leave with whom.

Sondheim and Prince had spoken for years about creating a romantic comedy, and eventually decided to create a show based on the 1955 Ingar Bergman film Smiles of a Summer Night. Wheeler’s witty script, mixed with Sondheim’s sophisticated score, prompted Prince to describe A Little Night Music as “whipped cream with knives”.

Winning Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book and Best Original Score, A Little Night Music is a story about hope and regret, action and inaction, and uncovering the truth in our hearts, never more apparent than in its infamous song Send in the Clowns.
