Second Year BA Acting students present a heady mix of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Romeo and Juliet.

Young lovers, with death and banishment hanging over their heads, running away from tyrannical parents and attempting to build a life for themselves on their terms. Both Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream share, in part, an abundance of overlapping themes. Though one is a fantastical adventure and the other a tragedy they share a fascination with the moon, stars and – of course – love.

The Dream is an attempt to weave these stories together, to highlight the similarities and celebrate the differences. We have used music, dance and a lot of editing to weave the stories together. Sometimes the stories seem to bleed into one another and at other time we wish they would – if only Romeo had an Oberon to help save the day!

We started our rehearsals in the most tragic of circumstances, losing the wonderful young actor Timothy Chiwaula, but the deep friendships and dedication of this remarkable group of young actors has allowed our time together to be a celebration of Tim’s vibrancy and humour. The show is an experiment, taking 400 year old stories and attempting to re-tell them in a new way. We hope you enjoy our endeavours!
