Conductor: Jan Latham-Koenig

Violin: Tamsin Waley-Cohen

Soprano: Marija Vidović, soprano

Dora Pejačević: Verwandlung Op.37; Liebeslied Op.39; Zwei Schmetterlingslieder Op.52 Nos.1 & 2 (soloist: Marija Vidovic)

Sibelius: Violin Concerto (soloist: Tamsin Waley-Cohen)

Mahler: Symphony No. 1

Two monuments from music’s ‘great leap forward’ (1880 to 1920, embracing huge developments in harmony and orchestration) dominate this visit by one of Croatia’s leading orchestras.

Sibelius’s Concerto, often called ‘symphonic’ in structure and range, giving prominence to many other instruments beside the violin, has the rare combination of consistent solo virtuosity and masterly sense of melody and form.

Mahler rarely used Titan to describe his first symphony (the most accomplished large-scale classical work in 60 years, since Beethoven’s 9th), but its 80+ orchestration certainly merits the name! The popular 3rd movement is an Austrian dance with an engaging singalong feel, while the finale echoes Beethoven’s 9th, memorably re-quoting themes from earlier movements.

There is no Pre-Concert Talk before this performance.
