Details

In July 2014, Tony Roper's play ‘The Steamie’ was presented on location in the last remaining Glasgow wash house; Govanhill Baths. ‘The Steamie’ is a hilarious, often bittersweet, portrait of working class Glasgow in the 1950s and centres around four women who have gathered at the local Steamie on Hogmanay, doing one last washing load before the New Year. They share stories of men, mince, dreams and aspirations and have plenty of laughs along the way! Tears are shed as the women think back to a lost way of life; as the old steamies are rapidly becoming replaced by laundrettes and nothing will be the same again!
