I’m delighted, along with my creative team, Ben Park and Michael Vale, to be back at The Exchange, where I first developed this piece of theatre, for several more ‘incarnations’ of Sancho & Me – for One Night Only. The show really is only for one night, because every performance is different, the evening being a mixture of book reading, impro, talk, music recital and audience Q&A, whilst I flip in and out of Sancho’s character.- Charles Ignatius Sancho was born on a slave ship on the Atlantic Ocean in 1729, yet he became a writer, composer, shopkeeper and respected ‘man of letters’ in 18th century London. Sancho & Me - for One Night Only is a solo performance by Paterson Joseph delivered directly to the audience, part-improvised each night and built around his recent novel The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho. Sancho & Me - for One Night Only explores ideas of belonging, language, education, slavery, commerce, violence, threat, politics, music and love - and where these themes intersect with Paterson's own story of being Black and British.
