Details

Indecent brings to life the haunting legacy of Jewish life at the beginning of the 20th century, confronting its pain, complexity and beauty. The play follows the true story a Polish-Jewish writer called Sholom Asch (1880-1957) and his first play, The God of Vengeance (1906). Asch’s play was written in Yiddish and tells the story of a Jewish brothel owner whose young daughter falls in love with one of the female sex-workers. Vogel’s retelling of this story follows the lives of the members of the Yiddish acting troupe who toured with Asch’s play around Europe before taking it to America. This story is about so many things, but central to it are the experiences of immigration, assimilation and the pain of losing one’s homeland.
