Schumann - Overture, Scherzo and Finale Saint-Saëns - Cello concerto no.1 Beethoven - Symphony no.7
A programme to delight! We begin with another buoyant “short symphony” - albeit without a slow movement - which Schumann called Overture, Scherzo & Finale. There’s then a charming concerto, Saint-Saëns’ 1st Cello Concerto, written in one continuous movement. Our soloist is the prizewinning Polish cellist, Maciej Kułakowski. Finally we’ve Beethoven’s unequivocal celebration of joy, his brilliantly rumbustious 7th Symphony. The very first review said “it enchanted both connoisseur and layman”, while Wagner called it “the apotheosis of the dance”
