Details
By Jonathan Harvey Beautiful Thing is a love story set during a hot summer on the Thamesmead housing estate in 1993. The story deals with the trials of the boys coming to terms with their sexuality and with the fear of others, especially Ste's abusive family, finding out. This is set against sub-plots of Sandra's new relationship with a spacey middle-class artist, Tony; Sandra and Jamie's often volatile mother-son relationship; and of Leah, the brassy girl next door who has been excluded from school and spends her time listening to Mama Cass records and acting out to try to stave off a lack of purpose and direction.
