Field Trip 1, Hampton Bishop

A 5-mile circular walk, exploring geology and landscape with Moira Jenkins, ecology with Will Watson, and navigation of the River Wye and River Lugg with Jane Adams.We will walk down the River Lugg to its confluence with the River Wye around the large meander loop of the river, see the effect of erosion and deposition during the Ice Age and at the present day, and how the underlying rock structure is reflected in the landscape. We will see the site of a former ford and also the Red Bank Cliff. The flat land between the Wye and the Lugg is protected by flood defence barrier and known locally as the Stank.After lunch at the Bunch of Carrots, we will cross the road and return on a footpath across river terraces to the River Lugg and Mordiford Bridge for details of car parking arrangements and the starting point, please see below.Arrangements
Meet Moira Jenkins at 9.30 am for 10.00 am at The Bunch of Carrots, Hampton Bishop, Hereford HR1 4JR, on the B4224, 4 miles east of Hereford. Grid reference OS 551 381. What3words: meant.defaults.hats.With the agreement of the Bunch of Carrots, some cars will be left there. The remaining cars will convey the party to the lay-by at Mordiford Bridge (space is limited), where the walk will begin and end.Please note lunch arrangements: Lunch will be at the Bunch of Carrots, about half-way around the walk (arriving at about 1.00 pm - 1.30 pm). An email will be sent to all who have booked so that menu choices can be made. Moira Jenkins will place the combined lunch order one week before the day to allow the Bunch of Carrots to cater for the party.
