About
This seasons main concert, Out of the Deep, explores the powerful human yearning for renewal from turmoil and loss to hope and transcendence.
This seasons main concert, Out of the Deep, explores the powerful human yearning for renewal from turmoil and loss to hope and transcendence.
We begin with Ethel Smyths The Wreckers Overture, a dramatic portrayal of a coastal community torn apart by greed and superstition, and of one womans courageous struggle against it.
This spirit of resilience leads into Oliver Tarneys Canticle of Elizabeth, a radiant and heartfelt reflection on faith and longing, as Elizabeth cousin of the Virgin Mary prays for the gift of new life.
At the concerts emotional centre lies Lili Boulangers Psalm 130 (Out of the Deep), heard here in a special new arrangement.
With its sumptuous harmonies and deeply expressive orchestration, Boulangers music gives voice to both anguish and consolation in one of the most moving settings of this ancient plea for mercy.
The evening culminates in a shared affirmation of hope and community with Hubert Parrys Blest Pair of Sirens, whose soaring lines and noble vision unite choir and orchestra in a final song of redemption and renewal.
