Award winning Gaelic singer and musician, Maggie MacInnes, will be performing contemporary arrangements of songs from a previously unreleased private archive recorded by her mother, the great traditional singer from the island of Barra, Flora MacNeil MBE.The archive of around 180 songs was recorded in the 1950s and 60s by an Australian folklorist, the late Dr James Kalokerinos, and includes many rare gems alongside some of the many traditional songs which Flora helped make popular today.
With the assistance of Creative Scotland, Maggie has put together contemporary arrangements of some of these songs in a show which is a tribute to Flora and to other tradition bearers who passed on the songs to her as she was growing up.Conal McDonagh on pipes, whistle and flute. who also plays with the band Braebach. The show was first performed atGlasgows Celtic Connections concert in January, 2026 to great critical acclaim.
Accompanying Maggie will be some of Scotlands finest musicians including Wendy Weatherby (cello); Dan Brown(keyboards); Alex Palmer (percussion) and Maggies son, Calum Park (guitar, fiddle and backing vocals)"Unanimously ranked among the finest singers ever to emerge from Scotland, Flora MacNeil MBE has been a vital force throughout the revival of Gaelic music that began after World War II, and continues to thrive today.
Heiress to a vast treasure trove of ancient ballads and work-songs preserved through generations of her family, she spearheaded the rescue of Gaelic singing from the Victorianised, pseudoclassical straitjacket that was threatening to strangle it, and brought it to the world in all its original, unadorned glory.
