Charles Darwin is a great hero to Humanists like me and in 2009 there were extensive celebrations of the bicentenary of his birth.
At that time I was giving various talks to Humanist Groups, schools & colleges in the South West about Darwin. This led me to Robert Fitzroy, the captain of HMS Beagle on the great five year voyage that inspired Darwin to his lifes work. Fitzroy was an equally astonishing character whose accomplishments stand proudly alongside those of his companion on that amazing journey. Fitzroys influence on Darwin was central to the theory of Natural Selection but he achieved great renown in his own right. This is the story of Vice-Admiral Robert FitzRoy FRS.
