How the first government funded road changed West Newcastle.

Find out about the new hard surface, all weather road, funded by the government as a military necessity in the 1750s, which runs west out of Newcastle to Carlisle.

Its route through Newcastle created the current day straight line roads of Westgate Hill, the West Road and the Hexham Road through Blucher, Walbottle and Throckley.Thirty historic mages will trace its route over years past.
