Landranger Map no 37DESCRIPTION
Leaving the stables at Glen Tanar, we begin our walk back to Ballater through the stunning Glen Tanar Estate. Having passed the boathouse on the lochan, we follow the Water of Tanar and cross it to enter the wilderness of the Glen Tanar Nature Reserve. Ascending from forest to heather-clad hills, we cling to the lower flanks of Clachan Yell, and drop down to rejoin the river. With the ruin of the Shiel of Glentanar to our left, we climb to Lach na Gualainn to take our path, via Ballintober, back to Ballater.TERRAIN
On a mixture of well-established Land Rover tracks, single forest paths and pathless heather-clad hillside. Walking poles recommended. May be wet underfoot as there are some burn crossings.
