The Brylcreem Boys is a true wartime story set in 1944. It follows George, a young RAF sentry who develops severe frostbite after falling asleep on a freezing night shift. Sent to a cottage hospital for sick airmen, he discovers that the rest of the ward is filled with Lancaster bomber crewmen suffering profound shell shock after a catastrophic raid on Nuremberg. Although George insists he is physicallynot mentallyill, the ward sister refuses to separate the RAF patients.
At night, the previously unresponsive bomber skipper leads the traumatized crew in reconstructing their aircraft using beds and chairs, compelling George to join them as they reenact their final mission. These intense, haunting scenes reveal the men reliving their terror and trauma, turning the ward into a surreal, nightmarish cockpit. The play powerfully highlights the psychological devastation war inflicts on servicemen.
Also on the bill, two of Alan Bennett's 'Talking Heads'.
