A hopeful, honest and quietly powerful story of one woman's attempt to complete the journey her brother began, Thundery at Times is an inspiring new book from Katie Carr, perfect for readers drawn to stories of nature, resilience and the enduring pull of the sea. When Katie's brother Toby died partway through his challenge to sea kayak every area of the Shipping Forecast, she made the decision to honour his memory by finishing what he started. Having never set foot in a sea kayak before, Katie sets out on a journey that takes her from the rhythms of family life in Barcelona to the far reaches of the British coastline, navigating not only unfamiliar waters but the shifting terrain of grief, identity and motherhood. This is not a story of daring feats or conquering the elements, but of persistence, connection and the small, stubborn act of keeping going. Across two years of often inelegant paddling, Katie finds moments of joy and solace in nature, while asking what it means to move forward after loss, and what might still be possible.Following her collaborative work on Moderate Becoming Good Later, this new book marks Katie Carr as a writer in her own right, offering a deeply personal and beautifully observed account of love, loss and living fully in the wake of both.Katie Annice Carr is an artist, leadership coach and university lecturer. After the death of her brother, and on discovering Toby's extensive documentation of his journey, she decided to finish telling the story he so clearly wanted to share.
Katie lives in Barcelona with her partner and their two boys.Katie previously joined us in April 2024 to discuss Moderate Becoming Good Later , and were thrilled to be welcoming her back for this next chapter in her journey.
