Our sixth Royal Academy of Music Lunchtime Concert for 2026 at the Good Shed - Friday 19th June at 1.00pm
Thomas Donkin (bassoon) & Xiaowen Shang (piano)Introduction from Nicola Mutton, Director of Artistic Planning, Royal Academy of Music"It is my great pleasure to bring some of the Academys exceptional student performers to this lunchtime concert series in Tetbury. Over the course of the year, more carefully curated concerts will showcase the diverse talents of our students, who represent a wide range of nationalities and cultural backgrounds".Our latest concert for 2026 features Thomas Donkin and Xiaowen Shang.Tomas Donkin is currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music under full Entrance Scholarship. He recently toured to Jordan as guest -principal bassoon with the Amman Chamber Orchestra and other orchestral performances include multiple appearances with the Philharmonia Orchestra, including Mahlers Symphony no. 8 at St Pauls Cathedral. At the academy he has played Scheherazade (principal) and Mahlers 4th Symphony (contrabassoon) with the Royal Academys Symphony Orchestra; and a full season as principal bassoon with the Odyssey Festival Orchestra.Tom is currently on trial with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra for the role of Associate Principal Bassoon and he was the Young Artist of the Year for the Moffat Music Society and a member of the prestigious Overture Programme at the Royal Opera House.ProgrammeHenri Dutilleux Saraband et Cortge

Nominated as one of BBC Music Magazines Rising Stars of 2024,Xiaowen Shangs recent career highlights include winning the First Prize of 2025 Prix Annelie de Man in Netherlands and being invited to come back as one of the festival artist in 2027 edition. Her debut album Music of Silence as part of the Royal Academy of Music Bicentenary Series has been featured on several playlists and has received positive reviews from various broadcast channels.Xiaowen Shang is a versatile pianist and harpsichordist with a passion for early, classical, and contemporary music. Her repertoire spans from Renaissance composers such as Antonio de Cabezn and William Byrd to contemporary figures including Olivier Messiaen, Pierre Boulez, and Brett Dean. She has collaborated with renowned musicians and composers such as Steven Isserlis, Joanna MacGregor, Rachel Podger, Brett Dean, Dame Imogen Cooper, Lawrence Power, and Adrian Brendel.
